Paint Estimate

Like other materials who rely on area in square meter to arrive at needed materials or finish, painting estimate similarly works the same but this time we need to get the theoretical paint coverage it can accommodate per liter.

A quick short sample estimate discussed here for a 12 sqm wall area which we can easily derived the number of can of liters needed with the basis from its "theoretical" coverage area but may vary depending on its usage if it's used as top coat or as primer.

Good thing for paints that known brands like Boysen have its own online calculator that you can access for free.

Nonetheless, you can easily make one from an excel program for your own projects and may add percentage of contingency.

Let's get back at our earlier sample of 4m x 3m wall having a 12sqm wall area, using the online calculator we get these values of liters required to paint over our wall.

With Primer requiring at least 2 liters and Topcoat at 4 liters.

Since most packaging of paints comes in 1 liter, 4 liters to 16 liters, let's assume we will just be using a 4 liters paint for this sample.

PRIMER

Say theoretical coverage area for 4 liters is 25sqm for "primer", solving for liters:

4/25 = liters/12 you get 1.92 liters

therefore: you still have extra 2 liters if you wish to apply another coat of primer after sanding the first coat application.

TOPCOAT

Say theoretical coverage area for 4 liters is 30sqm for "topcoat", solving for liters:

4/30 = liters/12 you get 1.60 liters

therefore: you still have extra 2 liters if you wish to apply another coat after applying your first topcoat once it reached its specified drying time.

At least for a 4 liters of paint you can achieve 2 coats application but may vary depending on the absorption rate of surface area where paint is being applied.

MASONRY NEUTRALIZER

If painting a newly concreted wall less than 28 days you may apply neutralizer to remove acid from concrete for better adhesion of paints, but more than 28 days no longer required to apply neutralizer.

Overall, these are just your "rough" estimate on needed liters/gallons depending on the type of paint and brand.

Other may have theoretical coverage area such as "22sqm/gallon", or some paints calculation uses "7.5sqm/liter", so always check with nearest dealer of paints on your location.
